The Red Onion

We were looking for a place to eat at U.P. Town Center. U.P. Town Center is a cool new dining place at Katipunan. We walked around and saw The Red Onion. It caught our attention because they have an “all you can eat noodles” promo.

They have rice toppings, noodles, appetizers, meals and drinks. I ordered the 39 Spices Beef Noodles . You can request for thin or thick noodles. They have the original and the light, medium, and high spice levels. I chose the medium level assuming it’s just right for my taste and I requested for thick noodles. The serving time was 15 minutes. While I was waiting, I watched the chef cook the noodles from scratch. He  carried a block of noodles, which he shred and dumped into hot water.

The food finally came and I started eating. I took a sip and a tear slid down my cheek as my mouth was on fire. It was spicier than I expected it to be. The beef is really soft and the vegetables too. I asked for another serving of noodles and this time I asked for thin noodles. The soup is really spicy and it got me wondering, how spicy the high spice noodles could possibly be.

This was the only Taiwanese restaurant I’ve ever been in. It was a whole new experience for me.

The 39 Spice Beef Noodle costs for P228.  The price is worth it.

That’s it for today everyone. Thank you for reading!

Our Dinner at Wooden Spoon

October 20, 2012

Parking

After our sister had her recital at UP Diliman, we went to Wooden Spoon at Katipunan. It was difficult to park because   a lot of cars blocked  the parking zone. A guard saw us and he helped us by asking the other cars to move. We parked in front and went in.

We asked the waitress for a table for 8. She led us to a table in front of the restroom. She gave us a menu and we ordered Wansoy Shrimp Nuggets and Crab Pancit. The Wansoy Shrimp Nuggets lived up to  shrimpy expectations but I could barely taste the wansoy. I like the crab pancit because it is crunchy and has real crab meat. (We didn’t get a chance to take a picture  because we gobbled it all up at once.)

Main Dish

Stuffed Pechay

Baked Chicken

Baked Chicken

We ordered   Baked chicken, Squid with chili and mushroom, Shrimp pampango, Wooden spoon fried chicken, Stuffed pechay and Fiesta rice. I think the Baked chicken needs some sort of kick so I put some chili on it but I guess others would like it for its subtle taste. The squid is spicy, the sauce is slightly sweet and it’s perfect seasoned. The Shrimp Pampango is outstanding with the crab fat sauce (aligue) or eaten on its own. The fried chicken is best with gravy. The stuffed pechay is my favorite . It’s stuffed not just with meat  but with a lot of   flavor. We kept eating the coconut sauce with rice after the stuffed pechay was all gone.  The fiesta rice is packed with flavors. It has the Chinese chorizo for sweetness, and  the red eggs and tinapa for saltiness.

Dessert

Pandan crepe

Sago Cake

Sago Cake

We ordered Pandan Crepe and Sago cake. The Pandan crepe has ube ice cream and  mango wrapped in pandan flavored wrap and topped with crunchies. The Sago cake is sweet and has crunchies on top too.

It was an outstanding dinner.

Is it affordable?

The Baked Chicken costs P 185 for 2 ; that’s  P 94.50 per person. The Squid with Chili and Mushroom is P 225 for 3 ; that’s P 75 per person. The Shrimp Pampango cost P 225 . A whole chicken cost  P 195 . Stuffed pechay rolls cost , P 155 for 7 rolls, that’s around  P22 per roll. An order of Fiesta rice for 4 people costs P 145 ;  P 36.25 per person . The pandan crepe costs  P 115 and the  sago cake costs P 65 per person. Our total bill is   about P 1,800. There are 7 of us, so that boils down to only around P257 per person.  It’s quite reasonable for a delicious dinner.

Everyone gave this dinner a thumbs up!

Buffet From Circles!

On May 18, 2012, we went to Makati Shangri – La  because we were craving for the buffet at Circles. We sat at the chef’s table, where there was a television. Their theme that night was seafood market. You can pick from a wide array of raw seafood and have it cooked the way you want it. The king shrimp were so big that I thought they were lobsters.  I had it cooked with boiled onions first. Then I had another king prawn with butter and chili. They were both delicious!

There were also some meat dishes. The shawarma was hot and  tender. The pita bread was soft and the stuffings were fresh. The curry was  deliciously spicy.   The mango float was fantastic because the mangoes were sweet and cold.  I wish my sister would make that dessert.

I didn’t have time to taste the beef ribs because it came out later, but it’s ok because my stomach was going to explode already.

Everything on the buffet called my attention, but I could only eat so much! I had sushi, King shrimp, Shawarma ,Roast pork ,Curry, Steamed Vegetables, plain rice, Pasta ,Bagnet (roast pork), Mango float, dragon fruit, oranges , water melon, and Fruit salad.

I wish you’d try Circles sometime…you won’t regret it!
